HOW TO BECOME A GREAT PMU ARTIST
Nov 13, 2024In the world of cosmetic tattooing, there exists a palpable dichotomy. Palpable, as in, ‘I can’t get this freakin’ taste outta my mouth’!
Some artists have an aim to invest in hands-on training to refine their technical skills, yet they often overlook the critical importance of understanding human skin, the very canvas on which their artistry depends in the first place! The issue is, they are led to believe that technical skill mastery is the component that will lift their status to a higher elevation. Yet they don’t place equal value on the importance of mastering the art of assessing skin identifying clues. Reading and evaluating the skin-canvas, with a keen, trained eye, will inspire a custom curated approach that will yield a beautifully healed tattoo outcome.
Mastering needle-in-skin techniques is obvious, yes. It’s what defines the term PMU Artist. Learning how to manipulate a pigment implant into the proverbial sweet spot of the skin, is one of the holy grails that artists should aim for. But true expertise lies in bridging this gap. This is because the nuances of the skin-canvas can greatly impact the quality and longevity of a HEALED tattoo. And isn’t that the goal? Isn’t that the holy grail? To achieve a stunning, long-lasting, artistically executed healed result that was based on the intended design-goal? You bet your ass it is! Bottom line: If you wish to be a great cosmetic tattooist, you must master the nuances of working in the skin.
So what’s the solution to achieving this seemingly simple goal? The answer is to -not only- learn, but MASTER a few key components: Master the nuances of the skin-canvas because tattooing is not one size fits all. Master the eccentricities of the living structure you’re working in. And master the art of custom-curating a bespoke approach, based on what your eye identifies.
Therefore I suggest that you learn how to speak the skin's language, an art that I've seen very few artists master. Until then, achieving a predictable, long lasting, beautifully-healed result (void of any gray funk), will most likely be a challenge.
