THE EYEBROWS ARE THE (QUINTESSENTIAL) PILLARS OF THE FACE

Since 1992 I have consulted with dozens of clients each week about their thinning eyebrows. Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks to help get your arches back on track:

HAIR REMOVAL IS THE CULPRIT

Although waxing is an effective and relatively inexpensive way to manage unwanted hair on the body, I never recommend waxing on the face. The skin around the eyes is the thinnest skin on the body and waxing will compromise the elasticity in this area. Moreover, waxing removes multiple hairs at once and may result in over-removal. When clients come to me with sparse brows, it is typically a result of years of over-waxing or threading, which is why I only recommend hand-tweezing or shaving (with a brow-razor) to properly shape the eyebrows.

HAIR LOSS

It is important to understand that the follicle is alive and will thrive when it is stimulated and nourished. Compromised hair is either dormant or inactive. Brow hair is influenced by perpetual over-removal which can eventually render the follicle inactive if essential brow hairs are over-removed.

When a client comes to me for brow-growth solutions, I always recommend using a growth serum first, in an effort to awaken dormant brows. It is impossible to determine whether a vacant hair follicle is dormant of inactive until you begin a consistent brow growth plan. I recommend starting with over the counter products like Minoxidil or any brow or lash growth product like Rapid Brow, applues 1-2 times per day for at least 12 weeks.

 TIPS FOR HAIR GROWTH

There are three ways to encourage hair growth: Topical growth serums, systemic supplements and topical stimulation. Over the counter serums are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. If you love the look of your eyebrows while using serums, you should continue to use them perpetually. Growth serums loose their efficacy when stopped. Therefore, using a serum 3-4 times per week, after you achieve results, will ensure that hair-growth is maintained at its optimum level. If not, hair-growth will fall back to its original pattern. For those who prefer a natural growth-approach to serums, cold pressed castor oil is rich in omega fatty acids and triglycerides, and is an effective natural alternative. Although castor oil does have a small molecule, it's nutrient-rich and will nourish the hair follicle. The key with using castor oil is to ensure that it's cold pressed and Hexane free. I recommend massaging it into the brows 1-2 times per day.

Stimulating the skin within the eyebrows will encourage blood flow that will nourish the follicle; blood is life. In addition, stimulation improves the effectiveness of systemic supplements. Taking a daily over-the-counter supplement, like Viviscal, rich in omega 7 and 9, will feed the follicle and encourage growth. Another supplement that I hear referred to often is Biotin, a vitamin B derivative known as B-7.  It that works well at strengthening keratin which can be found in both hair and nails; it is not, however, effective at nourishing the follicle. Biotin will help to make hair and nails stronger by avoiding breakage, but to say that it will actually grow the hair is a myth.
